SPT: Why modern transport is central to unlocking regional growth

As Scotland’s largest regional transport authority, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) plays a crucial role in planning, managing and delivering transport services that support economic growth, drive sustainability and connect communities across the west of Scotland.

Economic growth does not happen by accident. It relies on strong foundations, and chief among them is transport. A modern, integrated and reliable transport network is essential to unlocking productivity, attracting investment and ensuring people can access opportunity. For the west of Scotland, transport connects people to opportunity and underpins inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

As Scotland’s largest regional transport authority, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) plays a key role in sustaining that connectivity. From operating the Glasgow Subway and key bus stations to supporting essential bus services, we help keep communities moving. Every journey taken on public transport strengthens our economy by reducing congestion, widening access to employment and supporting town and city centres.

But, the transport landscape is changing. Bus patronage has declined over the past decade, services have reduced and too many communities face limited and unreliable connections. If we are to unlock the full economic potential of our region, we must modernise and integrate our transport system for the future.

That is why SPT is leading the development of Clyde Metro, a transformational long-term investment that will reshape connectivity across Greater Glasgow and beyond. By creating a high quality, integrated mass transit network with interchange points, Clyde Metro will improve access to jobs, stimulate regeneration, attract private investment and support Scotland’s economic and climate ambitions.

Alongside this, bus reform presents a major opportunity to design a system that puts passengers and communities first. Through greater local influence and integration, we can deliver a bus network that is more reliable, affordable and aligned with wider economic and social priorities.

Transport underpins productivity, inclusion and sustainability. With the right investment and reform, we can ensure the west of Scotland has a transport system fit for a growing, dynamic and competitive economy.
