The Minister spoke about progress with the Scottish Government’s Vision for Trade, and briefed on its New Deal for Business and the Scottish Government’s position on the revocation of EU laws following the UK Government’s Retained EU Law Act 2023. IBC members and the Minister discussed the importance of a Green Industrial Strategy and reforms in skills delivery to achieve the global energy transition opportunity for Scotland; cluster development, support to bridge to commercialisation for life science SMEs and promotion of innovation across all businesses following the recently-published Scottish Innovation Strategy; and the digitalisation of the UK border.
Changing Skills Consultation
Scottish Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Business and Fair Work Daniel Johnson met employers at a meeting hosted by SCDI with ScotlandIS to discuss his Changing Skills consultation. The meeting discussed transparency of outcomes for employers about Apprenticeship Levy funds and greater flexibility for employers to spend funds on their skills needs and in their supply chains; developing the skills structures for reskilling workers; greater industry control supported by public sector quality assurance of skills qualifications; a false dichotomy between traditional and tech skills when traditional skills will incorporate applying tech skills; the need for a 5-year horizon in skills planning; and strengthening the interface between schools and employment, including a more structured approach with fuller insights into all industries.
