SCDI responds to Education and Skills Committee’s STEM inquiry

The Education and Skills Committee of the Scottish Parliament launched an inquiry into STEM, in particular experiences of 3 to 7 year olds in childcare and school education, in April 2019.

MSPs asked teachers, academics, organisations and stakeholders to have their say on whether teachers have the skills, confidence and resources to teach deliver STEM subjects; the success of different STEM initiatives; and the sharing of best practice.

SCDI’s Young Engineers and Science Clubs (YESC) Scotland progamme has played a key role in inspiring young people towards STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) careers since 1987. There are now more than 1,500 clubs in our network, with an estimated membership of over 30,000 boys and girls across Scotland. We operate a flexible model, actively encouraging schools to use our resources widely within the curriculum as well as at extra-curricular clubs.

SCDI’s response to the Committee’s inquiry highlighted:

  • YESC’s success in supporting tens of thousands of teachers, children and young people to engage with STEM teaching and learning over three decades;
  • Barriers to success for initiatives, including the cost and availability of supply cover for participating teachers; and,
  • The importance of teaching digital, data and technological skills in schools to ensure Scotland’s young people are ready to thrive in an economy and society already transformed by the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
