Member spotlight: AtkinsRéalis

Please give us an overview of AtkinsRéalis and what you do?

AtkinsRéalis is a world-class engineering, design and project management services company. We create sustainable solutions that connect people, data and technology to transform the world’s infrastructure and energy systems.

In Scotland we work across all key sectors of industry and infrastructure with clients such as Transport Scotland on major road programmes, SSE for energy transfer, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation on the Clyde, and local authorities such as Aberdeen, North Lanarkshire, and Edinburgh City Council on buildings & places and master planning.

Our team of around 1,000 professionals across our offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen are working on a number of high profile projects such as the Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station reimagining, the Edinburgh Futures Institute and the Clyde Mission with Glasgow City Region. AtkinsRéalis was recently named Consultancy of the Year for the fifth time at Learning Places Scotland.

We are also delivering vital infrastructure projects for clients such as Scottish Water, Transport Scotland and Network Rail including A9 dualling project, A83 Rest and Be Thankful improvements, North Bridge refurbishment. We are also playing a pivotal role in supporting the DIO on critical defence projects and addressing the 2050 net zero target through work on a number of flagship projects such as Western Link 2 and Dogger Bank Windfarm.

We deploy global capabilities locally to our clients with a breadth and depth of expertise rarely matched in the market including unique end-to-end services across the whole life cycle of an asset. Our range of multi-disciplinary services includes consulting, advisory & environmental services, intelligent networks & cybersecurity, design & engineering, procurement, project & construction management, operations & maintenance, decommissioning and capital.

What are AtkinsRéalis missions and how do these influence your activities?

Our global mission is to engineer a better future for our planet and its people and we aim to achieve that by designing and delivering major projects on the built and natural environments all around the world.

We believe that digitally enabled engineering has the power to radically improve the way we are all housed, connected, powered, and protected and can change our relationship with our communities and our planet for the better.

We’re committed to leading our clients in Scotland across our various end-markets to engineer this better future for our planet and its people as it’s our belief that only by connecting people, data and technology across our global organization, partnerships and industry, that transformational change is possible.

This requires us to understand the most complex projects, end-to-end. It demands we deliver ambitious designs underpinned by flawless execution. It necessitates the ability to make Net Zero solutions, powered by digitally enabled processes, the norm. And it means that culturally, we aim to be an open, invitational, and a likeable team that problem solvers are instinctively drawn to.

How do you see your focus changing in the future?

Our focus is quite clearly on growth, both as a business and for our clients. While there will be evolution as new technologies, approaches and challenges arise from our clients, we are committed to supporting economic growth in Scotland and the UK through the delivery of sustainable infrastructure.

From city regeneration and connectivity through transport links to the security of our water and energy supplies that will enable sustainable growth and climate goals, infrastructure underpins the economic and social opportunities that will define communities across the country for generations to come.

The key to unlocking growth through sustainable infrastructure lies in the ability to build partnerships, streamline planning, secure funding and move at pace into delivery mode.

What, if any, barriers are you facing at the moment and what are the opportunities for growth?

The greatest challenge to any business working in this sector is ensuring there is the right level of skills and resources to deliver on the major programmes that are going to deliver growth.

We are actively involved in schemes to address this through our apprenticeships and initiatives such as encouraging more STEM subject governors in schools to inspire a new generation of engineers, planners and designers.

But we need to do more to implement digital solutions where we can use technology for a lot of the ‘leg work’ that takes time, freeing up our professionals to focus on the core deliverables of their roles. Adopting modern methods of construction can also drive efficiencies that mitigates the lack of resource on construction projects with industrialised production creating more standardisation and reliable outcomes.

Our growth opportunities will be underpinned through the effective use technology, freeing our skilled people time to deliver more for our clients.
